Have you heard? The FIFA Women’s World Cup is taking place now in Canada! The tournament started on June 6th and will run through the final on Sunday, July 5th. The tournament started out with 24 teams, which will eventually be narrowed down to one World champion. Teams are currently divided into six groups, lettered A-F and will compete within themselves to qualify for further matches. A total of 32 games have been played thus far in the tournament with four more games taking place today.

So far, scores have been relatively close and competition has been high. Scores have generally fallen within three goals of each other and there have been quite a few ties. The three blow-out matches so far have illustrated Ecuador and Cote D’Iviore’s struggle to compete within their groups. Ecuador faced a 10-1 loss to Switzerland followed by a 6-0 loss to Cameroon. However, they gained some potential momentum and dignity versus Japan, a game they lost by only one goal.

For the US, the biggest competitor is likely to be Germany. The Germans are the only team rankeduswomenhigher on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking as of March 27, 2015. So far the Germans have managed to rack up 15 total goals in the tournament. They beat both Cote D’Iviore (10-1) and Thailand (4-0) with comfortable score margins, however their tie against Sweden (1-1) showed that they can be broken down. Historically, games between the US and Germany have been intense and competitive . It will be exciting to see who comes out on top this year.
